Crude Oil Preheater for a Process

The heat pipe preheater, presented in the photograph below, was manufactured in 1998 for a Romanian crude oil exploitation field.

It is manufactured using six large heat pipes made of carbon steel tubes, longitudinally finned.
Both the jackets, for crude oil and for hot water, are serial connected. Crude oil and hot water streams flow between the jackets and the finned parts of the heat pipes.

Main features:

  • Heat pipes: 6 pieces, carbon steel Ø 114 x 5 mm; working fluid : acetone.
  • Heat pipes geometry: total length - 3,260 mm; vaporization length (in hot water) - 1,340 mm; condensation length (in crude oil) - 1,750 mm. The condensation and vaporization parts are each provided with 24 fins (18 x 2 mm) welded longitudinally.
  • Jacket for hot water circulation: carbon steel pipe Ø 168 x 6.4 mm.
  • Jacket for oil circulation: carbon steel pipe 168 x 6.4 mm.
  • Heating fluid: hot water.
  • Crude oil mixture rate: 3,6 m3/h crude oil, 8.5 m3/h salted water, 208 Nm3/h methane.
  • Inlet crude oil mixture temperature: 10 °C.
  • Outlet crude oil mixture temperature: 45 °C.
  • Heat transfer rate: 435,000 w.

With extensive experience in designing customized solutions for oil preheaters, TRANSTERM® offers this system for improving the process heating.
The oil preheaters can be designed into a variety of shapes and sizes to meet specific storage tanks requirements, and to fit the customers’ applications.
